The importance of love, family, and community....

I was thinking about my next piece when I came across something that I wrote back in 2015. For the month of July, I wanted to share my thoughts on the importance of love, family, and community. Talking about love, however, is always a struggle for me because the word has less or more meaning to some of us than others. This being the case, the message, the meaning can get lost. When I came across ‘My Latest Revelation that is Relevant to Us All Regardless of Religious Beliefs’, I knew it was a must share! So, let’s jump right in…

I have heard the question asked, “Why isn’t the word ‘love’ mentioned in the Quran nearly as many times as it is mentioned in the Bible?” Me being a seeker of information I decided to research the question. What I found is that for many of us our spiritual life is not just about knowing the Bible or the Quran; it is also about knowing ourselves as human beings. Once we hit the spiritual realms in which we are all capable, we begin to “feel” beyond what the English vocabulary can explain. Take a look at what I mean.

Research says:

Each Book, the Quran, the Bible, and the Torah are all books that are used as ‘guides’ or ‘instructions’ on how human beings are supposed to live while on this plane. There is so much information ranging from creed to legislation, to history, scientific phenomena, and domestic, business, and social dealings.

Of the three books, the Quran is the one that seems to have people asking about ‘love’. Where is it in the Book? Why doesn’t the Quran mention the word love as many times as the Bible? Well, there is a reason, which will lead to my point of this post…..and in the end will have nothing more to do with ‘us’ as human beings than it will about religion, so please keep reading.

This is deep so I need you to think about the words that you read; digest them….

Okay, so the Quran is a Book known to touch the depths of the soul; it is said to speak to both the heart and the mind of the reader. Hearing some of the Surahs (chapters) when recited in Arabic will bring tears to your eyes without having a clue of their translation! Within these Surahs there are tons of topics about love; however, it is not always expressed by using the actual word ‘love’ but rather it is illustrated in a highly evolved, sophisticated way both linguistically and intellectually.

When identifying the meaning of the word ‘love’ in the English dictionary, the verb has a number of simple emotional meanings; on the contrary, the same verb used in the Arabic language is very rich and complex and therefore is not necessarily expressed by using the word ‘love’ in the same way as it would be used in English. For example, in Arabic expressing the manifestations of love, its obligations, and responsibilities of compassion, care, esteem, respect, self-sacrifice, humbleness, forgiveness, and so on is an absolute expression of love. This type of expression is throughout the entire Quran, thus expressing love as previously mentioned, in a highly evolved and most sophisticated way linguistically and intellectually. Faith, prayer, and good deeds are not only clear indications of an individual who has a relationship with God, but it is also an indication that one has love and lives with love in their heart; therefore it is exemplified through his/her daily living….as God has instructed for us all regardless of which Book we read or don’t read.

Now, keep reading because here is where it gets deep…..

Keeping in mind what I just mentioned about the verb ‘love’, and how it is expressed in highly evolved and sophisticated ways I want you to just imagine this:

Love is a word, an emotion that comes and goes; one that is often used so loosely that it is said more often than it is actually meant. We’ve all had a relationship or two where we told a person that we loved them; even said, “I can’t live without you.” I tell my children that I love them all the time; I’ve even tried to explain to them that my love is deeper than the words, and although I knew that I was unable to really understand or explain it.

Last night, I had the biggest revelation; one that is so important that I have to share it! I would love for us all to experience this amazing feeling; this feeling that cannot be expressed by using the English word ‘love’!Here it is….the word love is just that, a word. After what I’ve learned, the word has no real substance. Why, you say? Because it changes, it fluctuates based on the situation and/or individual. Now, we all have been told that we must love others as God loves us; and this is speaking generally. But is this possible knowing that love changes and are often based on situation and/or individual? God does not change; He does not fluctuate based on the individual or situation! There is not one word ever created that could describe what God feels about God’s creation; think about that for a moment….God is the One, the Absolute, there is none like the Almighty!

God says, “Be” and it is! How in the world can we conjure up a word that expresses how God ‘feels’ (for lack of a better word)??? We can’t! So, for me….the definition for the emotion that has no words is to have a feeling for another that surpasses the verb love as we know it; thus making the word so shallow that it cannot ever be used in the same way again. The emotion that has no words is internal, unexplainable; it is truly a feeling; one that is almost overwhelming but yet a very comfortable and warm emotion. There is no word to define this emotion; it is beyond verbal expression. The only means of expressing this emotion is through action, through gesture, through touch, when you look into the eyes of another sharing only the gaze and without words conversing in an unspeakable language. This no-worded emotion surpasses the human experience, it can only be felt in the spirit; thus making the one who experiences it a ‘Spiritual Intellectual’ feeling an emotion of God; an emotion that is beyond what many human beings will ever experience. And, once felt all you can do is say Alhamdulillah (All thanks be to God)!
